Regar la grieta, 2024

Regar la grieta is an exhibition developed by the artists Diego Silva, Florencia Varela, and Felipe Pineda. The exhibition consists of an installation made up of two object-based works that reflect on the regenerative potential of eroded or barren lands and soils.

Our approach is based on the concept of seed latency in soil—meaning that a seed can remain dormant for a long time in unfavorable conditions, unable to germinate. However, when the right conditions return, the seed will sprout, revealing that the potential for life was always there.

Since Earth is the only place we can inhabit, and given the current planetary context of an imminent global ecological crisis, we seek to question our relationship with the land and the state we find ourselves in as we look toward the future. Climate instability, species extinctions, droughts, and the unchecked expansion of industry pose a growing threat, and economic activity is no longer a source of optimism. We consider these terrors to be a shared space, where we all witness the crumbling of the world together.

Thus, we invite viewers to embrace an imaginative challenge—to activate our ability to look ahead. A deeper reflection on this, however, suggests an unavoidable truth: everything that begins must also end, following a cycle that will start anew. We propose seeing the soil as a living entity with its own cycles, recognizing in this perspective an opportunity to restore its lost vitality due to erosion. Just as a seed can return in the future, so too can soil, as both are part of the same ecosystem.

In this way, we aim to rethink our current relationship with the planet, encouraging action towards the regeneration of a damaged Earth. By nurturing this fertility, we cultivate a curiosity that fuels the imagination for a possible future.

The first piece, Semilla latente, consists of an installation of three cylindrical structures, each measuring one meter in height and fifty centimeters in diameter. Each structure contains a bowl filled with soil and seeds, forming a self-contained ecosystem. The bowls are connected to a motor that periodically makes them vibrate, highlighting the capacity for movement—and therefore, the latent life—within what might otherwise appear inert.

The second piece, Lágrima seca, is an installation made of small droplets of dry soil, simulating rainfall. Each droplet is suspended in the air, collectively forming the illusion of a dry rain. The droplets are made of clay, earth, and water. Some of them contain seeds within, which sprout from the droplets as the clay retains moisture.

“Regar la grieta” es la muestra desarrollada por los artistas Diego Silva, Florencia Varela y Felipe Pineda. La muestra consistió en una instalación compuesta de dos obras objetuales que reflexiona en torno a la posibilidad regenerativa de tierras y suelos erosionados o secos.

Para lo anterior, nos basamos en la idea de “latencia” de una semilla en el suelo, es decir, una semilla puede pasar un largo tiempo sin germinar en un suelo que no posee las condiciones para su apertura. Pero, al momento de volver a las condiciones óptimas, la semilla brotará, demostrando que siempre estuvo ahí la posibilidad de vida.

Dado que la Tierra es el único lugar donde podemos habitar y asumiendo el escenario planetario de la inminente crisis ecológica global, buscamos cuestionar nuestra relación con ella y el estado en que nos encontramos de cara al futuro. El descontrol climático, las extinciones, las sequías, el progreso inmensurable de la industria se convierten en una amenaza y la actividad económica deja de ser una fuente de optimismo. Estos “terrores” los consideramos un espacio común, en donde todos compartimos el desmoronamiento del mundo.

Buscamos entonces, invitar a asumir un reto imaginativo y poner en marcha nuestra facultad de mirar hacia el porvenir. Pero, una visión profunda de lo anterior sugiere comprender lo inevitable: todo lo que inicia también termina, cumpliendo un ciclo que debe volver a iniciar. Para eso planteamos el suelo como ser vivo que tiene ciclos y desde allí vemos una oportunidad para rescatar su vitalidad que se ha perdido por la erosión de los suelos. Al igual que la semilla que puede volver en un futuro, los suelos así también lo pueden hacer, formando ambos parte de un mismo ecosistema.

De esta manera, intentamos repensar las relaciones que hoy mantenemos con el planeta, invitando a poder actuar en responsabilidad por la regeneración de una Tierra dañada, cultivando desde esa fertilidad una curiosidad que potencie la imaginación por un futuro posible.

La primera obra llamada “Semilla latente” consiste en una instalación compuesta por tres piezas cilíndricas de 1 metro de alto y 50 centímetros de diámetro. Cada pieza es una estructura con un cuenco que contiene tierra con semillas, formando un ecosistema en sí mismo. Cada cuenco está conectado a un motor que cada cierto tiempo hace que el cuenco vibre. Lo anterior, con el fin de presentar la capacidad de movimiento, y por lo tanto, la vida latente de este elemento al parecer inerte.

La segunda obra, “Lágrima seca” es una instalación hecha de pequeñas gotas de tierra seca que simulan una lluvia. Cada gota está suspendida formando entre todas la ilusión de una lluvia seca. Las gotas están hechas por arcilla, tierra y agua. Además, algunas de estas gotas contienen en su interior semillas, las cuales brotan de la gota por la humedad de la arcilla.
